The Future of English

I think whether English will continue to be a global language will be decided by whether the U.S. will continue to have strong power. The reason why English became a global language is the U.S. influences many other countries. Moreover, their countries imported American technology and products, so English spread widely and changed more usefully. If the world didn’t change anything until the next 200 years, English would spread more widely and more other countries. However, China starts to have strong power, these days. It has more population than the U.S., so the market is bigger. If China replaces the position of the U.S. in the next 200 years, the importance of Chinese will be higher than today. In effect, the countries where people speak English as second language, it isn’t used. In international business, using global language is more efficient than using other ones, so I think other languages won’t become more important.
Therefore, if the U.S. maintain strong power, English will continue to be a global language. I hope so because I’d like to avoid studying new languages from now.

  1. I agree with you that whether English will change is depend on the big country like the United States of America and China. the population of speakers of Chinese is increasing so someday China will have strong power at market. I don't want to study new language, too.

  2. I have been taking it for granted that united states would continue to be country which has biggest power, so I could realize that it is possible that china could be one through reading your opinion. In addition, I strongly agree with the last sentence.

  3. I agree with your idea. There is no doubt that the power of America over the world is closely related to the spread of English. So if China comes to have more strong influence than America, Chinese will be major language in the world. If America still have big influence in the future, English will continue to be a global language.

  4. I agree with your idea. I think that China will be bigger in the future but American economy has the strongest influence. So, if Chinese economy became stronger, English would not be replaced by Chinese, unless American economy decline.

  5. Because products by the USA spread, people who speak other languages came to have to study English for using them. This idea was interesting for me because I couldn't come up with.

  6. I strongly agree with last sentence:) Because Chinese people also learn English and Chinese character is very difficult for most people around the world. So, for business, English is the best language.

  7. How the economics develop is a difficult issue. English will be a global language, I think, but there will be more people choose a third language to learn.
